Post-Quince Wisdom From Tía Isa

Los quince años were a tough age for me because I used to fight a lot with my mom. Eventually, I grew really close to her — it just took a lot of learning along the way. If I could go back in time and tell my 15-year-old self 15 important things, I’d say this:

  1. We cannot accomplish anything by ourselves. We all need each other. Being part of a team is very rewarding. Your family is your team.
  2. Make sure you do something you LOVE every day. Otherwise, you’ll get bored.
  3. Don’t miss out on the gifts of nature. Do stop and smell the roses, listen to the birds, make friends with the butterflies, sing and dance.
  4. Laugh at yourself from time to time. If others laugh at you, don’t fret — it happens to all of us. Remember those famous words from Eleanor Roosevelt: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
  5. Don’t be afraid to try something new. There is so much to be discovered in life as long as you are not harming yourself (like smoking — which gives you yellow teeth, bad breath, wrinkly skin ... yuck!) or doing anything illegal.
  6. Every day is a new beginning. You can try again whatever you attempted to do yesterday. You only fail when you stop trying. Stay hopeful.
  7. A kind word or gesture goes a long way. Every time you are kind to somebody, somebody is kind to you. It’s all about karma!
  8. Shooting stars are magical — for real! Never stop looking for them. When you see one, make a wish.
  9. Never hesitate to ask for help. Never be ashamed to ask questions. The smartest people ask lots of questions all the time.
  10. Remember to always say PLEASE and THANK YOU. Being grateful brings prosperity.
  11. You have self-control. You can do anything you set out to do and you can be whatever you want to be. We are all divine inside.
  12. Nothing lasts forever. Not trouble, not pain, not confusion. Neither do the good things, except for LOVE. The sooner you accept this, the better you’ll learn how to deal with everything.
  13. You’ll know your true amor when you meet him, because he’ll want to be your friend first. A friend who accepts you just as you are. A friend who walks beside you and who is willing to wait for you.
  14. Real friends are those who lift you up and make you feel good about yourself. They don’t just tell you what they think you want to hear.
  15. Your mom IS your best friend. After all, she knew you before you were born and she lives her dreams through you too.

Do you have any words of wisdom?
