What If? ... Isabella on What Could Go Wrong

By Isabella Wall

q:What if a lot of guests don’t show up?
a:Enjoy yourself. As long as your immediate family and closest friends are there — and a photographer to capture the event — that’s all that matters.

q:What if my party starts slow?
a:Don’t panic. Things may get off to a quiet start because guests might be too shy to dance. Have someone you trust make a couple of CDs with really cool party music in case you need to rescue the DJ. Then start a conga line with the court — it always works.

q:What if my party is outside?
a:Be smart. Consider the month and season when planning your quince. If it rains, have the chambelanes escort guests with umbrellas. Planning your quince for August? Hand out bottled water or serve lemonade. You might want to alert guests with a weather update through a mass e-mail a few days before the big event.

q:What if my damas mess up our dance?
a:Keep your cool. Avoid crying for the wrong reasons or you’ll ruin your fabulous makeup. It’s already going to be superemotional to dance with your dad and to hear your mom’s speech when she gives you your last doll.

q:What if I trip and fall?
a:Don’t be scared. But if you do slip, get up and take a bow. Turn the embarrassing sitch into a joke. If you laugh at yourself, it’s far less painful.

q:What if everything’s not perfect?
a:Be prepared. Let’s face it, something could go wrong, like the cake collapsing or somebody running into it. Accidents like that are out of your control, so just roll with it. But it doesn’t hurt to have a quinceañera emergency kit just in case. Fill it with spot cleaner, sewing kit, nail file, makeup, tape, glue, aspirin, and bandages.

q:What if I have to make a speech?
a:Be grateful. Thank your family, especially your mom and dad, your madrinas and padrinos, and anyone who helped make your dream come true. Talk about what their support means to you. Then take the opportunity to tell everyone that you love them.
