Weddings and quinceañeras are moments when the more classic you look, the better. Girls celebrating their quince have more leeway after all, when you are 14 or 15, anything looks good on you! But in general, when you are thinking about the look you want for your special day, remember that you and your family will be looking at these pictures for years to come. Now that I am an adult, and I can look at things from a larger perspective, I see that its best to opt for classic beauty, which will look timeless and stunning in photographs years from now.
Not that I actually did that. Out there on the World Wide Web for everyone to see and download are tons of pictures of me in my teens, when I thought less was less and more was fabulous! The heavy foundation, the matte red lips, the Aqua Net hair I did it all. I looked very much the part of a teenager in the 80s. Its like someone let me loose at the department store beauty counter and I decided to try everything on my face at once, kind of like Boy George. In my quinceañera photos I am sporting a Mexican interpretation of a Duran Duran hairdo and yes indeed a sweatband à la Olivia Newton-John. I may have looked ridiculous, but I felt like I was the flyest girl in the room, and no one could tell me anything different. And at the end of the day, that is what I wish for every girl who is contemplating how she will do her makeup and hair on her quinceañera. Whatever you decide to do, you should end up feeling like you are the star!
For quinceañeras, the focus should be more on combining classic beauty with a modern twist. My personal preference is also that quince girls look their age, not like a 35- year-old vamp. The goal should be a playful, fun, and fresh look, nothing too sexy. There is plenty of time to look sexy. Now is the time to have fun. For makeup, choose eye shadows with a little glimmer or shimmer. Use beautiful, flirty fake eyelashes on the outer sections of the lash line. Stay away from dark or smoky eyes. Make your cheeks rosy pink. Lorac has a great phosphorescent pink that looks amazing when applied. Try a plumping lip gloss for to-the-max shine and shape. For your hair, choose a style that is fresh. You are going to dance, sweat, laugh, kiss all your friends and loved ones, and be the center of attention. The focus should be on having fun. That is something I did do right with my quinceañera look: I had fun. I had my costurera knock off a Dior dress from an ad I found in Vogue. At that time, Molly Ringwald was la maxima para mithe top style icon. I made my hair Cyndi Lauper-ish, with my satin sweatband replacing the tiara. That was my way of giving my look a modern twist.
