girl wearing a well-chosen tiaraSome girls ask me, what's the difference between a crown and a tiara? A crown is completely round and a tiara is open in the back. Royal families have worn crowns and tiaras for ages, to symbolize their special status. For a quinceañera, the goal is to look and feel like a princess, so wearing a tiara is essential! It's even more meaningful if your mom places your tiara on your head, in front of all your guests.

When choosing a tiara, remember:

The size you choose should depend on your hairstyle.

  • If you are wearing big hair, try a taller tiara that will stand out and not get lost in your mane. (A professional hairstylist is recommended to keep the tiara secure.)
  • If you are wearing an updo or have short hair, smaller tiaras are best and won't overdo your look.
  • Thick hair can hold any size tiara.
  • Thinner-haired girls, beware: No amount of hairspray will hold a heavy tiara.

The style you choose should depend on your hair color.

  • Blonde and dark-haired girls look prettiest with silver tiaras that have a touch of crystal or white tones.
  • Red- and light-brown-haired girls stand out in cream tones, pearls, and gold.
  • Also, if you have any pearls, beads, or crystals on your dress, you can wear a tiara with the same sort of sparkles and colors.

After the party, make sure you store your crown or tiara carefully. You might want to pass it along to your little sister or cousin someday and start a new tradition!

What kind of crown or tiara do you like? Do you have any suggestions for a special "coronation" moment?

Do you know what your perfect hairstyle is? It all depends on your face shape! Here are my favorite cuts for each shape:

If your face shape is OVAL, meaning you have a narrow forehead and jaw, like Jessica Alba does, you have a lot of flexibility! The oval shape is balanced, so it works for any hairstyle — long, medium or short, curly, straight, or wavy. But don’t let your hair cover your pretty face! Keep it pulled back or pushed behind the ears.

If you have Rihanna’s HEART-SHAPED face (wide at the forehead and narrow at the jawline), create the illusion of a wider chin with soft curls and chin-length hair. A medium bob creates a balanced look and adds volume.

Is your face ROUND, like Cameron Diaz’s? The best thing for you is to keep your hair close to the sides of your face and give it volume at the crown of the head, creating the illusion of an oval shape. If you want your face to appear narrower, keep your hair at a length below your chin — and try layering.

A broad and square forehead and jawline like Rosario Dawson’s create a SQUARE-SHAPED face. You can wear your hair long and parted to the side or with bangs, and it will look great! Don’t bother with bobs with heavy bangs, geometric cuts, and long styles that part down the middle.

If your face is more long than wide like Sarah Jessica Parker’s, that’s called OBLONG. Your forehead is high and your chin is long. You need a haircut with lots of volume — curls and waves will add width.

Do you have a narrow forehead and cheekbones with a wide jawline? Then you have Victoria Beckham’s TRIANGLE face. Find a medium hairstyle that is favorable to your jawline, with layers added for fullness around your upper face.

Hey, have you ever had the wrong hairstyle? What was that like?
